W. H., GreenLight laser PVP surgery, 08/2008

This week was the ninth week since my GreenLight laser PVP surgery June 11, 2008, at age 69. I was absolutely lucky and fortunate to find a doctor as progressive and expert as Dr. Muench. I read thoroughly his excellent website February 2008 and noted particularly that he used the procedure for "heavyweight" prostates, those over 200 grams.  In 2002, examination at Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) showed my prostate was at least 220 grams. I had endured symptoms for about 20 years and the situation was growing desperate, going to restrooms about every 10 minutes 24 hours a day. A good night's sleep was impossible. Tests at WRAMC in January 2008 showed that I was only emptying about 10% of my bladder at any one urination. Let me tell you, this was a miserable lifestyle. Unfortunately, I knew WRAMC still uses the "gold standard" TURP procedure, an ancient method compared to GreenLight PVP.

I found GreenLight on the internet and searched for urologists listed as using GreenLight. However, two of them in my area, Washington, DC, said my prostate was too large and they were afraid the laser procedure would take too long and there wouldn't be enough time to remove the required amount of tissue. The first recommended the microwave procedure instead, and the second recommended we "just be done with it" and remove the entire prostate. After visiting the second urologist, that very afternoon, May 14, 2008, I emailed Dr. Muench and explained what the two doctors told me and that his website said the GreenLight worked for any size prostate.  Dr. Muench replied that same day and said that's true, he does heavyweights often, and I should schedule an appointment with his staff.

The friendly and helpful people on his staff worked with me and scheduled the surgery for June 11. Dr Muench called me about a week before the surgery and explained the main points of the procedure. I drove the 120 miles to Newark, had the procedure the next day. I felt no pain after the operation and no pain in the hospital room. I drove back home the day after surgery, Thursday evening, with the catheter still in place with a leg bag.  I stopped once at a rest area on the way home to empty the bag, no problems. There was very little blood in the urine in the bag, this laser surgery is amazingly bloodless.  On Friday morning after the Wednesday surgery, I removed the catheter by myself, a very simple procedure with no problem.  There was a little bit of stinging during the first urination, but that was nothing.  I passed one blood clot on Friday, but none after that. It felt like a small pebble zipped down the urethra.

Dr. Muench told me that my prostate was well over the 220 grams Walter Reed had found in 2002, and he thought it could be up around 300 grams.  That is huge!  About the size of an orange, and most prostates are about the size of a walnut.  Because of this, Dr. Muench had to take over four hours during the surgery, but he said he got all the diseased tissue, and that amount was somewhere close to 300 grams.

Dr. Muench was right when he came into my room and said "Welcome back with the rest of us guys!" Now I can go anywhere I want and not be embarrassed by going back and forth to the restrooms like a yoyo.  And I can sleep all night and wake up in the morning with a full bladder like when I was a kid. This is wonderful!

Dr Muench, I can't thank you enough, as far as I'm concerned you are a Miracle Physician! If any "Heavyweight" prospective patients want to contact me, I'll be happy to speak with them and recommend they come straight to you!
